This family reached out because they were leaving the Bay Area, moving closer to family in Canada. Mom and Dad met in the Bay Area; their first child was born in San Francisco, and some of their most formative family memories centered on weekend days spent in Marin.

So this family session was about saying goodbye, and about creating a set of photos and a short video that will immediately transport them back to this season of their lives. Right before it changed.

One of my favorite pieces of our time together was incorporating their toddler’s bike. Both parents are avid cyclists, so they bring the balance bike everywhere to encourage the same in their daughter. I also loved that the dad brought his vintage Rolleiflex TLR medium format film camera – the same one I have – and that I was able to document him taking pictures of and with his family.

This Is Why

This is why I photograph families – because you want you to remember how it felt.

If you see beauty in the chaos, if you want to remember the whole rollercoaster that is childhood + parenthood, I hear you.
