And Now We Have Chickens

This is an adaptation of my weekly newsletter, Adventures Big & Small. If you want to receive emails like these, click here to subscribe.

I wrote a few weeks ago about how life was feeling too busy, even though I don’t like that word. Writing about that turned out to be a good thing for me – I’ve since been telling myself and anyone who asks that life is “full.” And it’s made a world of difference, that little change. The words we tell ourselves are powerful.

Anyway, you could argue I’m in the same spot as when I wrote that email. I wrote this edition of Adventures Big & Small late on a Sunday night because…well, because life is full. Full of early morning hikes and daycare transitions and trees full of plums becoming ripe all at once and the daily challenges of learning to parent a toddler.

And all things chickens! We got six chicks this year, our first as a family, and they are infinitely more entertaining than I expected. They take a lot of our time, mostly because we love hanging out with them and watching our daughter interact with them. We must use the word “gentle” one thousand times a day.

With the chickens came the deadline for renovating our chicken coop. Our new Marin home is wildlife central – since putting our chicks in the coop during the daytime, there are foxes literally circling them nonstop. So I’m working hard to build a fortress of a coop.

Anyway, that’s all for now, but expect more chicken (and fox) + toddler pictures to come.

Here’s to another full week!
