This was my third year in a row working with this lovely family. It has been a joy watching them (quickly) grow.

Our first two years with met near their home in Oakland, but this year they wanted to explore Marin. In their planning questionnaire, mom noted comically…

“One wild toddler and two wild preschoolers must be kept far from cliffs at all times. Wild toddler will likely try to eat sand if available. Wild toddler was recently upgraded to ‘unstable walker’ status and refuses to be picked up—this means we won’t be covering a lot of ground.”

After laughing out loud, I suggested Bon Tempe Lake near Fairfax. No cliffs, beautiful light and backdrop, and a grassy space for the kids to go wild just minutes from the car.

I have heard it said that parents of three are often some of the happiest, because there is no choice but to surrender and relax into the wildness childhood. This mom and dad make me believe it. They are strong parents, with firm values and boundaries. But they don’t sweat the small. And, as you can see in the photos, they are thoroughly enjoying it.

I’m David, and I photograph Bay Area families that are super proud of where they live. My easygoing presence puts everyone at ease, and I focus on candid emotion and moments of connection. No posing, no stress.
