I don’t always know what to expect when meeting a family for the first time. Especially at the beach. People have a wide range of comfort with sand and salt and wind and kicking their shoes of at the edge of the ocean.

We make the best of any comfort level, but my favorite sessions usually end with sandy feet. This family was ready for anything, so we started in the dunes near Lincoln Ave and the Lower Great Highway, slowly working our way down to the water’s edge.

The kids already had a game in mind that involved getting as close to the waves as possible and then sprinting back to dry sand without getting (too) wet. I couldn’t have asked for better. Games like these not only create action and joyful energy, but they also show an awareness and connection to the natural surroundings.

This was a favorite session of 2024!

I’m David, and I photograph Bay Area families that are super proud of where they live. My easygoing presence puts everyone at ease, and I focus on candid emotion and moments of connection. No posing, no stress.
