Environmental portrait with towering Monterey pines, a pond, and a family with a toddler embracing in the corner of the frame.

This is a family I’ve only just met, but one I hope to photograph for years to come.

Not having spent much time in front of the camera, and feeling understandably anxious about it, the parents were looking for just the right amount of direction. They wanted photographs that felt true to who they are and honest to this season of their lives, knowing that a little guidance and interaction would help them get there.

When families feel uncertain or are seeking something specific, I always suggest a phone call. It was only after talking things through together that we all felt confident this would be a good fit. That sense of ease carried naturally into the session itself.

The morning arrived wrapped in deep fog, which I welcome wholeheartedly, especially in a place like the San Francisco Botanical Gardens. Towering cypress and benches tucked beneath redwoods are transformed into something ethereal, magical, in the presence of Karl the Fog.

We wandered through the Waterfowl Pond, the Moon Viewing Platform, the Redwood Grove, and everything we discovered in between. The energy was unhurried and tender, filled with soft laughter and long pauses. The morning ended, fittingly, with their little boy asleep in their arms.

This Is Why

This is why I photograph families – because want you to remember how it felt.

If you see beauty in the chaos, if you want to remember the whole rollercoaster that is childhood + parenthood, I hear you.
