This session felt like a rare bridge between lifestyle and documentary styles. Documentary because I did very little directing and mostly just photographed what was happening in front of me. Lifestyle because no one was in their pajamas.

A few other elements of this session were quite unique. One was the setting. This family lives in a historic home built in the early 1900’s, one that spent much of the past century as a church parsonage. It has been beautifully restored, with every room, nook, and corner full of craftsmanship and character.

The other element that brought these photos to life was the time of day. I default to midday in home sessions (to make sure that most rooms have enough light), but this family opted for a morning session. They specifically wanted to capture the way it streams through their windows and dapples their living spaces. And they were right. It was magic.

I’m David, and I photograph Bay Area families that are super proud of where they live. My easygoing presence puts everyone at ease, and I focus on candid emotion and moments of connection. No posing, no stress.
