The Details

  • Location: South Rodeo Beach, Marin
  • Season: Spring
  • Time of day: Sunset
  • Inspiration Experience: Battery To The Beach At Sunset

So much of this incredible place we live is defined by how the Pacific Ocean meets the land. Rugged headlands, a beach, sometimes the forest pouring directly into the sea. I love locations that give a sense of that relationship, and this family session was a perfect example.

These three have a deep connection to the Marin Headlands, but also loved the idea of letting their daughter play at the water’s edge and watching the sun set at the beach. Battery Alexander and South Rodeo Beach emerged in our planning as the ideal fit.

I had never photographed at either before, which always makes me nervous, but the truth is that new locations always lead to my most inspired work. In this case I wanted to highlight the variety of environments but also how they are linked. A military battery, sweeping Marin hills, California Poppies blooming along the trailside – all with an eye towards the ocean.

This is a location that requires walking and usually ends in wet and sandy feet. My favorite kind of place.

“We had an amazing experience with David! He really cared about what we were looking for… The photos are stunning, and we couldn’t be happier with the session or the memories he helped us preserve.”

“We thought the pictures might feel too posed, or that our daughter wouldn’t respond well… but David put all those concerns to rest with his calm, thoughtful approach.”

This Is Why

This is why I photograph families – because you want you to remember how it felt.

If you see beauty in the chaos, if you want to remember the whole rollercoaster that is childhood + parenthood, I hear you.
