This session took me outside of my comfort zone in two ways.

First, we began at Dickson Ranch, a historic horse facility in Woodacre. I did not grow up around horses, so my comfort around them is limited. But this family has a special connection to the ranch, and one of their favorite activities is visiting the horses. I’m so glad they suggested it, because you can feel in every one of their photos the comfort and familiarity they have with this unique place. It just feels like home.

Switching locations mid-session is also something I rarely suggest. But I never say never. Just 5 minutes from Dickson Ranch, the San Geronimo Commons is another classic West Marin spot, a favorite amongst families with dogs who love to run and explore. Ending the day at The Commons was perfectly natural for this family, so I leaned into it.

This was technically a digital photo session, but I threw the film camera over my shoulder and snapped a few. As usual, they are quirky, imperfect, and some of my favorites!

I’m David, and I photograph Bay Area families that are super proud of where they live. My easygoing presence puts everyone at ease, and I focus on candid emotion and moments of connection. No posing, no stress.
