Portraits at the Conservatory of Flowers

A short, lush film portrait session inside one of San Francisco’s most iconic spaces: the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park.

Step into a Victorian-era glasshouse filled with tropical plants, filtered light, and year-round greenery. It’s warm inside, vibrant with life, and surprisingly calm. And the best part? Rain only makes it better.

This experience centers on lifestyle portraiture in a rich botanical setting. Quiet moments as a couple. Kids pausing to examine a new flower. Everything framed by ironwork, foliage, and soft natural light.

Mid-morning or mid-afternoon both work beautifully here, making this an easy addition to a larger San Francisco day.

📆 Often Available: weekdays, weekend mornings

The Basics

  • Conservatory of Flowers, San Francisco CA
  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Effort: Easy
  • Medium: Film Photo
  • Focus: Lifestyle portraits
  • Best For: Family, Maternity, Newborn, Couples, Seniors
  • Cost: $875

The Session

We might start outside for a few snapshots on the lawns, but most of the session will take place indoors, under the transparent, vaulted ceilings of the Conservatory.

We’ll move slowly through various environments, pausing for portraits in favorite locations, stopping wherever catches your fancy in between.

I’ll be looking for layered foliage and architectural framing to create images that feel timeless and slightly cinematic.

The Gallery

  • 45 minute session
  • 35mm or medium format film
  • 20+ high-resolution scans
  • Professional, shareable gallery
  • 20% off prints

This gallery leans more portrait-forward than most of my outdoor outings. While still candid and lifestyle-driven, there’s space here for refined, grandparent-worthy images.

Questions. Answered

Yes. While it’s not a playground, there’s gentle space for exploration and movement. The session is short and engaging.

Perfect. Rain outside often makes the interior feel even more magical!

Inside the Conservatory of Flowers, it’s warm year-round. Dress for a tropical greenhouse, even if it’s foggy outside. If San Francisco is doing its usual chilly thing, bring a jacket you can easily remove and leave at the door once we step inside.

I recommend keeping outfits relatively simple here. The space is already full of texture, pattern, and visual detail, and you don’t want to compete with it. Solid colors and smoother fabrics tend to photograph best.

Rich tones work beautifully against the greenery. Creams, soft whites, sage, rust, deep blues, and warm neutrals all complement the space. Avoid neons and bright tones, which can clash with the plants or pull attention away from faces.

If you’re unsure, err on the side of understated and timeless. The architecture and foliage will do the rest.

Inspiration Sessions thoughtfully pair the location with the medium, so check the top of the page to find out whether this session is captured on film or digital.

Film is slower and more intentional, and the end result is less about technical perfection and more about feeling. I take fewer frames and commit to the moment. The photographs tend to have a softer, more timeless look, often with natural grain and texture. You may see a few frames that are slightly soft or imperfect in a way that feels human. That character is part of what people love about film.

Digital photography gives me the freedom to take a lot of images. That means I can work quickly with moving kids, handle low light, and deliver sharp photos in a wide range of conditions. It also gives me the luxury of selecting the “best” split-second moments during editing.

If you want the cleanest, sharpest, most technically consistent images, digital is the better fit. If you want something more tactile, nostalgic, and emotionally textured, film is magic.

Parking is generally easy on weekdays, with more time needed on weekends. Because John F. Kennedy Drive is closed to traffic in this area, expect a 10 (ish) minute walk from wherever you park. One option is street parking along Fulton Street adjacent the Conservatory. If you want the simplest option, opt for the paid underground garage at the Music Concourse Garage, just a short walk away.

Photos for most sessions are delivered within 4 weeks. If you purchase Rush Delivery, they are delivered within 7 days (sometimes less, ask for current availability).

Please allow up to 6 weeks for delivery of videos and analog film photos.

No. The Conservatory is open to the public, but we work thoughtfully and efficiently within the space. Avoid weekends if you want a quieter energy.

For San Francisco residents (bring ID), entry is free. Visitors are typically $12-$15pp.

Make it a day

Turn this session into the start or end of a memorable outing with these nearby suggestions.

âś“

Grab coffee and a pastry at Tartine Inner Sunset, just outside the park on 9th Avenue (5 min drive, 15 min walk). Photographer’s pick: chocolate croissant.

âś“

Wander the old JFK Drive, where pianos in the street, whimsical large-scale art, and the occasional coffee truck make the park feel unexpectedly alive.

âś“

Spread out a blanket in Heroes Grove, a towering stand of redwoods nearby.
