Spring Wildflowers in West Marin

What’s a “Beta” Session?

A new experience I’m excited about, but have yet to photograph. The mood board below may include images of my family, past work, and a few references that show the space or capture the vibe we’re going for.

I’ve done the homework, but we’ll need to stay flexible and embrace some surprises. It’s discounted accordingly.

Each spring, West Marin quickly shifts from green to gold as the blue-eyed grasses, poppies, and Douglas iris add pops of color to the rolling hills.

This experience isn’t about standing in front of flowers. It’s about slowing down long enough to notice them. We’ll go for a rambling walk with no destination in mind. We’ll move slowly and stop often. Bring a field guide.

This year’s bloom is happening really early. Embrace the early Spring warmth and catch beautiful morning or evening light while the wildflowers are at their peak. We’ll catch it all on nostalgic, analog film.

📆 Often Available: weekend mornings and weekday afternoons

The Basics

  • Bolinas Ridge Trail, Olema, CA
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Effort: Medium
  • Medium: Analog film photo
  • Focus: Environmental, lifestyle, seasonality
  • Best For: Families with curious kids who like to wander
  • Cost: $1275 $875 (beta)

The Session

This is about feeling the season shift.

We’ll walk slowly. We’ll look closely. Kids crouching to examine petals and insects. Adults breathing deep and hearing wind moving through the grass.

There may be portraits, but they emerge naturally from movement and interaction. The focus is on hands brushing through tall grass, conversations about color, learning the names of things, and feeling the abundance of spring.

The Gallery

  • 90 minutes
  • 35mm film
  • 25+ high-resolution film scans
  • Professional, shareable gallery
  • 20% off prints

This is not for families who want posed portraits with a superbloom backdrop. This gallery is meant to tell a seasonal story that is about time and place.

Location Specifics

Best light

Just after sunrise (my favorite) or close to sunset. Avoid weekend afternoon crowds.

Terrain

Dirt trails over rolling hills. We can walk as far as we’d like, but plan to ramble at least 1/2 mile from the car.

Weather

This can be a windy place, and cold air blows in off the Pacific. Throw extra layers in your car. Here’s the local forecast.

Restrooms

No restrooms. The closest option is Due West coffee shop or Samuel P Taylor Park (15-minute parking at the entrance, restrooms nearby)

Dog friendly?

Yes, on leash.

A rare occasion

Only offered when rain, sun, and my schedule align!

Questions. Answered

A new experience I’m excited about, but haven’t photographed yet. The pictures displayed may include images of my family, past work, and a few references that show the space or capture the vibe we’re going for.

I’ve done the homework, but we’ll need to stay flexible and embrace some surprises. It’s discounted accordingly.

These experiences are built around real conditions — tides, light, flower blooms, coastal weather. A little fog or wind is often part of what makes them feel alive. Unless your experience includes Sunshine Insurance, we’re going to lean into what Mother Earth sends our way.

If conditions look truly unworkable or unsafe – often rain forecasts greater than 30% or any sort of weather warning – we’ll cancel, and I’ll issue a full refund right away so that you can book an alternate session.

In some cases, depending on my availability and the realities of that particular Inspiration Experience, a reschedule may be offered at my discretion.

If illness or something unexpected comes up on your end, reach out. I’ll always aim to handle things fairly and thoughtfully.

Yep, as long as your kids are the type that like to wander, explore, and look for bugs & flowers!

We’ll start with a short walk on gentle trails to get away from the road and cars. If you have a jogging/hiking stroller, that can help us get farther from the road more quickly.

The only “gotcha” here is that tall grasses can have ticks. Long sleeves and pants will help, but more important than anything else is doing a thorough “tick check” when you get back to the car, then when you get home as well.

I would base your outfit on deep, earthy tones, creams, and sparing whites. Avoid strong greens, and bright colors need to be chosen wisely to avoid clashing with tones in the landscape.

This one’s right on the line between adventure and photo session. You want footwear that can handle some trails and walking through tall grass. But it’s not a big hike.

Texture photographs beautifully in the hills, and dresses or accessories that flow will add a sense of movement. Keep distractions minimal, although a patterned dress could work. Guys tend to look great in jeans or chinos, sturdy boots, and a neutral shirt.

Inspiration Sessions thoughtfully pair the location with the medium, so check the top of the page to find out whether this session is captured on film or digital.

Film is slower and more intentional, and the end result is less about technical perfection and more about feeling. I take fewer frames and commit to the moment. The photographs tend to have a softer, more timeless look, often with natural grain and texture. You may see a few frames that are slightly soft or imperfect in a way that feels human. That character is part of what people love about film.

Digital photography gives me the freedom to take a lot of images. That means I can work quickly with moving kids, handle low light, and deliver sharp photos in a wide range of conditions. It also gives me the luxury of selecting the “best” split-second moments during editing.

If you want the cleanest, sharpest, most technically consistent images, digital is the better fit. If you want something more tactile, nostalgic, and emotionally textured, film is magic.

Roadside pullout, and aside from the busiest times (which I’m avoiding), there’s usually plenty of room.

Just be careful about getting out of the car with kids and dogs, as cars move fast on that stretch.

Photos for most sessions are delivered within 4 weeks. If you purchase Rush Delivery, they are delivered within 7 days (sometimes less, ask for current availability).

Please allow up to 6 weeks for delivery of videos and analog film photos.
