Tidepooling at Duxbury Reef

What’s a “Beta” Session?

A new experience I’m excited about, but have yet to photograph. The mood board below may include images of my family, past work, and a few references that show the space or capture the vibe we’re going for.

I’ve done the homework, but we’ll need to stay flexible and embrace some surprises. It’s discounted accordingly.

A rare kind of Bay Area magic – a minus tide that reveals an entire hidden world.

We’ll follow the receding ocean out onto the reef, move slowly, and photograph your family in that in-between space where sea meets land and everything feels newly discovered.

This session is about the experience of learning and growing together as a family, and making nostalgic, timeless images to remember it.

📆 Often available: on rare, negative tides

The Basics

  • Duxbury Reef, Agate Beach, Bolinas, CA
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Effort: Moderate
  • Medium: Film Photo
  • Focus: Documentary, capturing a unique experience
  • Best For: Ocean-minded families
  • Cost: $1475 $875 (beta)

The Session

This is an immersive (beta) session celebrating our relationship to the coast. We’ll keep a close awareness of the conditions, search for sea stars and anemones, and capture it all on warm, grainy analog film.

On sunny days, think colorful sea creatures, hands dipping into tidepools, and kids splashing in the shallows.

If the fog rolls in, we’ll bundle up for a quieter, more contemplative morning together.

The Gallery

  • 2 hours together
  • 40+ high-resolution film scans
  • Professional, shareable gallery
  • 20% off prints

This a documentary session. While we may catch some moments where people are looking at the camera, don’t expect polished portraits. This is about capturing the feeling of the day.

Loose Timeline

00:00 – 00:15

Arrival + Orientation

We’ll meet at Agate Beach about an hour before the negative low tide, and take a few minutes to get grounded. We’ll talk through the conditions, where we’re headed, and what to keep an eye out for, then do a quick clothing and gear check before heading out.

Explore the pools

As the ocean recedes, we’ll make our way onto the reef together. I’m not a guide, but I’ll be your co-conspirator as we explore this beautiful world between land and sea together. This is the time to pull out guidebooks & binoculars.

01:00 – 01:30

Time to play

Depending on the conditions, this might be the time to head back to the beach, kick off shoes, and splash around in the shallows. If it’s cold and foggy, this might look more like a bundled walk up the beach.

Slow finish

As the tide begins to rise we’ll reflect, dry off, warm up, and slowly make our way back to the cars.

Location Specifics

Best light

Mid morning – before the crowds, but while the sun is overhead for the best underwater visibility.

Terrain

A short, steep approach to the beach. Wet, slippery shale & reef in the pools.

Weather

Wind, fog, and cold are to be expected. Click here for local forecast, but don’t expect it to be right 🙂

Restrooms

Restrooms are available at Agate Beach parking lot.

Dog friendly?

Not really. Technically allowed on the beach, but should stay out of the intertidal zones.

A rare occasion

Only offered when my schedule aligns with the rare, negative-low tide.

Questions. Answered

A new experience I’m excited about, but haven’t photographed yet. The pictures displayed may include images of my family, past work, and a few references that show the space or capture the vibe we’re going for.

I’ve done the homework, but we’ll need to stay flexible and embrace some surprises. It’s discounted accordingly.

My experience with Agate Beach is limited. We’ll try to use off-peak hours to ensure that parking is not an issue.

It depends. For toddlers you need to have an ocean-aware adult dedicated to them at all times. For school-age kids, this is a great experience as long as they can maintain clear boundaries around water safety and avoiding reef damage.

Whatever age your kids are, they also need to be a bit resilient – ok getting wet and sandy. With the right footwear, feet will ideally stay dry, but one slip into a tidepool will change that completely.w

Inspiration Sessions thoughtfully pair the location with the medium, so check the top of the page to find out whether this session is captured on film or digital.

Film is slower and more intentional, and the end result is less about technical perfection and more about feeling. I take fewer frames and commit to the moment. The photographs tend to have a softer, more timeless look, often with natural grain and texture. You may see a few frames that are slightly soft or imperfect in a way that feels human. That character is part of what people love about film.

Digital photography gives me the freedom to take a lot of images. That means I can work quickly with moving kids, handle low light, and deliver sharp photos in a wide range of conditions. It also gives me the luxury of selecting the “best” split-second moments during editing.

If you want the cleanest, sharpest, most technically consistent images, digital is the better fit. If you want something more tactile, nostalgic, and emotionally textured, film is magic.

Comfort matters more than anything. Coastal weather here is unpredictable and can change quickly. Start with something you’d wear to the beach on a warm day, then add a light layer. From there, bring a puffy jacket or your warmest sweater, plus a warm hat. Even calm mornings can turn chilly.

I recommend packing a bag of extras to leave in the car: dry base layers to change into when we’re done, extra shoes or sandals, and maybe bathing suits if that sounds fun.

Footwear is worth some thought. Tall rubber boots keep everyone dry and warm. Water shoes with good traction are another great option. Just know that feet will be wet and potentially cold for an extended time.

This is a forgiving environment for color. The muted tones of rock, water, and seaweed mean rich blues, olives, rusts, and other earthy hues feel right at home while still offering contrast. A touch of muted yellow, orange, or pink plays beautifully against the colors in the pools. Creams and off-whites photograph well too, but avoid pure white.

I’d steer clear of bold patterns or very bright colors, especially for adults, as they tend to compete with the intricate textures and patterns underwater.

Photos for most sessions are delivered within 4 weeks. If you purchase Rush Delivery, they are delivered within 7 days (sometimes less, ask for current availability).

Please allow up to 6 weeks for delivery of videos and analog film photos.

Fog, wind, and gray skies are part of what make our coast so special. This experience is designed to happen in those conditions. In fact, overcast days often create beautiful light and bring out the colors and textures of the reef.

We will cancel or reschedule in the case of rain.
