I love bringing urban elements and landscapes into family photography, but only when they have specific meaning for a family. So I don’t typically recommend these locations, unprompted, but am always excited when a parent comes to me with the idea.

These two moms suggested the grounds in and around the De Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences. They bring their son here frequently, and they have a long history themselves – a few of my favorite photos from the session are snapshots I took while they recounted the story of their first botched proposal, right there next to Rideout Fountain.

It was one of those days where the edge of the fog sat right above us, creating soft portrait light most of the time, but allowing a few dramatic architectural shadows, here and there, as the sun broke through.

But what brought this session to life was the love story of these two moms and the gratitude they shared for their son. You can feel it in every photo. I hope to see them again next year!

I’m David, and I photograph Bay Area families that are super proud of where they live. My easygoing presence puts everyone at ease, and I focus on candid emotion and moments of connection. No posing, no stress.
