It is rare to find a location that offers deep redwood forest and picturesque open space, all within a short walk from the car. Roy’s Redwoods and the San Geronimo Commons pair perfectly and give us a lot of latitude when choosing a session time and making the most of available light. Which is really important with a toddler in the mix.

During the summer, especially, sunrise sessions are much too early, and sunset golden hour is well after most kids’ bedtime. For this session, we didn’t start until 2+ hours after sunrise, and their photos still have that warm, soft feel we’re often seeking closer to dawn or dusk.

Another magic thing about morning sessions is the leisurely pace. Everyone shows up with a soft, reflective energy, and there are very few people around. This gives kids the space to engage with their surroundings. It also gives me the chance to capture a lot of those magic little details that speak to this season for your family.

I’m David, and I photograph Bay Area families that are super proud of where they live. My easygoing presence puts everyone at ease, and I focus on candid emotion and moments of connection. No posing, no stress.
