The Details

  • Location: Tennessee Valley + Roy’s Redwoods
  • Season: Fall
  • Time of day: Afternoon
  • Of note: Weekends afternoons are crowded at T Valley – this was a weekday. The incredible light in Roy’s is a combination of late afternoon sun and some mist in the air (happens most often in Winter or Spring).

I don’t photograph a lot of graduating seniors, and that’s because the props and perfectly styled setups don’t appeal to me. But when a senior or family approaches me with place at the heart of what they are hoping to capture, I’m here for it.

This Mill Valley senior was looking for photos that spoke to a few of the most impactful environments he grew up around – golden coastal hills and redwood forests. We chose Tennessee Valley near sundown for the golden hills, and Roy’s Redwoods in the late afternoon for the redwoods.

Another piece of this senior session that really appealed to me was the inclusion of Luke’s family. Our achievements and the direction we are headed as high school seniors are often so deeply impacted by our close family. I love how that felt like an integral part of this story.

This Is Why

This is why I photograph families – because you want to remember how it felt.

If you see beauty in the chaos, if you want to remember the whole rollercoaster that is childhood + parenthood, I hear you.
