Family of four walk holding hands across golden field in sunset light.

This is the second year I have photographed this lovely family, and both years we chose a location that was new to me. New locations always have an element of the unknown. Inspiration and creativity, it seems, outweigh the nervousness that comes with the unknown.

Ring Mountain is located in the town of Tiburon, Marin County. There are trails that lead from nearly every point of the compass toward the top of the hill, where you will find open space and sky, scattered oak groves, and beautiful grey boulders. One of the boulders is somewhat of a landmark named Turtle Rock.

From the top of the hill, you have a nearly panoramic Bay Area vista – the Golden Gate Bridge and the SF skyline, Richardson and San Rafael bays, Mt. Tamalpais and Mt. Diablo.

The photos that came from this session are truly some of my favorites from 2024, and it was my best year to date. I spent a few minutes thinking about what made this session unique, and here’s what I came up with –

The best photo galleries always come from experiences where the people match the place. Where a family is doing something completely natural for them. When I am watching something unfold that has, in a way, happened a thousand times before.

In this gallery, Mom and Dad are rock climbers. As a family, they are comfortable outside, and they love exploring new Bay Area landscapes. The feeling of ease and freedom and movement reverberating from their photos…I can’t create that, I can only notice it and make pictures that reflect it.

Right family, right place, right time.

I’m David, and I photograph Bay Area families that are super proud of where they live. My easygoing presence puts everyone at ease, and I focus on candid emotion and moments of connection. No posing, no stress.
