Spring in the Bay Area can be a wild season. Afternoon winds are often 30+ miles per hour, and the Marin Headlands can bear the brunt of it. But for families willing to embrace the wind, it makes for beautiful photos full of motion and environmental flair.
Rodeo Beach at dawn has become my gold standard for light and contrast. Depending on the time of year, you have to get there really early. But the dark sand, the green and sandstone hills, the ocean and the lagoon all come together to create absolute magic soon after sunrise.
I can’t think of a Bay Area beach less visited. The proximity to more popular spots and the somewhat forgotten trail help, but it feels like a quirk that this place is so little used.
