We get to choose the people we surround our lives with. I spend a lot of time around families, and this one obviously put a lot of energy and intention into doing so.

Kate (she/they) and Sydney (they/them) landed in San Francisco because of the community that they found. Political activism was at the heart of their community. They found Edward (he/him) and Joseph (he/him) through that activism and chose them as guide parents to their daughter.

Ed is actively taking part in the 2024 election cycle (hence the megaphone and campaign pins), and Joe is acting as the supporting partner, so getting all five of these together at one time took a valiant effort on their part.

The day was hot and sunny, a rare (not foggy) summer afternoon in San Francisco. Golden Gate Park was overflowing with people, meaning that the initial location of Koret’s Playground was simply too busy for taking photos. We quickly pivoted to the AIDS Memorial Grove, which turned out to be perfect – shaded, quiet, calm.

These photos are a mix of film and digital, adding to their variety and overall soulfulness 🙂

I’m David, and I photograph Bay Area families that are super proud of where they live. My easygoing presence puts everyone at ease, and I focus on candid emotion and moments of connection. No posing, no stress.
